What Did We Glimpse in the Valley?

It is a short three-hour flight from Beijing to the Liangshan Mountains. Yet the journey from Liangshan to Beijing stretches far longer. It can take rural children as many as twelve years to catch a glimpse of the capital. Those twelve years are embodied in the persistent lamplight beside school desks, the embers kept alive in family hearths, well-worn baseball bats at home, and rows of charity-built primary schools. Above all, they stand for the children’s gaze piercing mountain mist and crossing rugged valleys toward a distant future in Beijing.

We spent two months in Liangshan to bring back fragments of its land and culture, among them the intricate, vivid patterns adorning traditional Yi embroidered skirts. Stitched into the fabric are murmured Yi scriptures spoken by unknown voices, open lesson plans left by volunteer teachers beside basketball hoops, and the slim silhouettes of local young workers gazing upward from assembly lines as they strive to earn their tuition. Such elaborate embroidery weaves a broader path bridging the mountains and the outside world, opening doors for more people to step out of Liangshan and for others to journey in.

All of Liangshan’s stories nestle within the folds of the embroidered patterns.

Su-Ni and Bi-Mo, the two primary ritual practitioners of the Yi people, stitched flame motifs onto the skirts, marking the inseparable ancient bond between the Yi of Liangshan and fire. This everlasting flame has since taken on a new form, which advocates for educational progress, including Jike Azuo, Jihou Riha, He Zhenzhen, the elder founder of Liangshan Kindness Charity, alongside countless teachers, volunteers and students, have spent decades reshaping local attitudes toward education. They embroider cloud patterns for the Yi’s future, enabling children to ride the wind and soar above the clouds.

Yet the skirt’s beauty lies not merely in the aspiration to leave Liangshan behind, but in the vision of stepping into Liangshan itself. Its embroidery captures the region’s layered, multifaceted reality. The frozen moment when volunteer teacher He was struck by a local guardian, paired with the round teardrops of children begging her not to depart. The frail frame of teenage student Jike earning tuition on an assembly line and her resolute lips whispering this would never define her life. The trembling hands of veteran teacher Jihou receiving wages withheld for thirty years alongside the dwindling embers of the Yi language fading beside domestic hearths. Liangshan is neither a tale of perpetual sorrow nor idealized romance. It embodies resilience sprouting from hardship and conflict, an enduring vitality like a sturdy tree rooting and thriving amid barren soil.

Those who act should stand aloof from personal gains and losses; those who advise should immerse themselves in the stakes involved. We are neither detached onlookers nor outsiders distorting Liangshan through a skewed lens. Instead, we stand as contributors rooted deeply in its reality. Guided by this ethos, our exhibition draws upon wisps of mountain mist, twigs of wild foliage and handfuls of spring water collected locally to immerse viewers in Liangshan’s authentic truth. It lays bare the region’s hardships and struggles, hopes and breakthroughs, as well as the raw realities etched into every crease of its land. As wind rustles reed leaves and tears apart layered clouds, we catch a fleeting glance into the mountain valley.

We have curated the immersive exhibition Immersed in the Reality along the second-floor corridor of Haidian Kaiwen Academy. The show will run from June 8 to July 4, and all students are warmly invited to come and visit!
