Floria and Abby, members of the GLANCE organization, authored a digital modeling research paper addressing agricultural issues in the Daliang Mountains. The paper aims to help G Village explore the advantages and feasibility of converting sloping land into terraced fields (as a farming model), as well as potential crop diversification. They hope that, through collaboration with the local government, they can help the households in G Village achieve self-sufficiency and truly resolve some of their economic challenges. This article was written by Floria.
This mission was finalized in early September 2025 and was scheduled to be completed during the National Day holiday in October. Before the mission, I first reflected on my past experiences to determine exactly “why I was going.”
In April 2025, I visited the Daliangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan for the first time. It was my first encounter with what could truly be called “big mountains.” The children wore ill-fitting, tattered clothes, and the adults worked in the fields from dawn till dusk. It was also the first time I realized the importance of nonprofit organizations. In G Village, Daliangshan, with the help of a nonprofit organization, the community finally established its first elementary school six years ago, providing the children with a stable education.
Just when it seemed like things were finally looking up, we interviewed a family whose daughter loved to study but faced numerous obstacles standing in her way. In the Great Liangshan Mountains, girls are often viewed as “tools” to be married off in exchange for a dowry, thereby easing the financial burden on their families. The daughter in this family faced the same problem. Her solution was to spend her summer vacation working outside the mountains to earn her own tuition. She ultimately earned 3,000 yuan over the summer, securing her continued education. This family is just one example among the hundreds in Village—and a microcosm of the tens of thousands of families throughout the Greater Liangshan region.
Ultimately, what limits our Yi compatriots in the Greater Liangshan region is the underlying logic of their economy. When it comes to money and charity, organizations can only provide broad-based assistance to entire villages—such as establishing their own elementary schools, as in the case of G Village. However, for individual families, the amount each household receives from charitable donations is often insufficient. Not to mention the thousands of charitable organizations and initiatives outside the Greater Liangshan region, many of which engage in charity merely for the sake of holding events—but does this truly change people’s lives?
During a field research trip in April, I entered the deep mountains with two fellow companions. While conducting on-site visits, I noticed a striking tendency among our guide: he kept saying we needed to meet "people with stories." This made me wonder: what about ordinary people without dramatic tales?
That question grew heavier during a later visit. That day, we climbed over a wide earthen slope to find a local woman we had met by chance on a previous visit. During our last conversation, the guide abruptly asked her about her husband's whereabouts. Since then, she had remained silent. It wasn't until the end of the interview that we learned her husband had died in a work-related accident just a month earlier, leaving behind a child under one year old.
The mountain path was muddy and slippery after the rain. From a distance on the hillside, we caught sight of what looked like her figure. The four of us quickly rushed over with our filming equipment, but by the time we arrived, she had already vanished. We asked nearby villagers who were working in the fields, but their responses were guarded: "Why are you looking for her?"
Our group leader explained that we had come to offer help. A flicker of hope passed through the villagers' eyes as they replied, "Then could you actually help us?" The leader promised to do what he could, while also explaining that we were students from out of town. Still unable to find the woman, we turned back, preparing to visit the next household. At that moment, I suddenly realized that most of the talk about assistance had been mere polite formalities—we likely wouldn't return here again, nor would we ever cross paths with these locals once more.
Since returning to Beijing from this trip, I’ve been thinking about what can truly help them. Money is the most important factor, but relying on charitable organizations or existing strategies in the long term won’t bring about any real change; only when families become self-sufficient can some of these problems be truly resolved.
With these thoughts in mind, I set out once again for the Greater Liangshan Mountains in October, accompanied by Cindy and Bella. Given the need to protect the privacy of the local villagers and the limited size of my interview sample, I am unable to accurately summarize the situation of the entire village; therefore, I can only provide a somewhat general account of the information I gathered.

After visiting several local households, I found that the villagers’ incomes were mostly concentrated between 10,000 and 25,000 RMB. Moreover, because their essential living expenses—such as gift-giving, purchasing crop seeds and pesticides, and raising livestock—are quite high, most of them rely on bartering. During our trip in April, we sampled the cured pork that the locals had prepared themselves. Seeing cured pork for sale online gave me an idea: Why not try selling it in this village too? However, after inquiring, I learned that selling cured pork requires a food safety certificate, and given the poor local transportation infrastructure, as a high school student, I was unable to drive the development of the entire supply chain.
Looking out at the fields fresh from a bountiful harvest, my thoughts turned once again to vegetables. I asked several local residents, “Have you ever tried selling vegetables?” They replied in the negative. On this land, everyone grows nearly the same varieties of vegetables; even though there’s a surplus every year, most of it is fed to livestock, and there’s no market for it. If the existing vegetable varieties can’t be sold, why not try other crops? Based on my limited understanding, Liangshan’s high altitude and significant day-night temperature differences seem well-suited for growing crops like grapes. However, after visiting more households, I discovered that local farming practices generally rely on natural rainfall rather than irrigation. On sloping farmland like this, that would lead to severe soil erosion, making it unsuitable for growing such crops.

Armed with the interview information and a mind full of doubts, I returned to Beijing. After repeatedly reviewing the research materials, I came up with the idea of converting sloping land into terraced fields. However, the specific benefits still need to be verified from multiple angles. I reached out to Abby, and we collaborated on writing this research paper. Below is the abstract of this paper.

(This is the abstract of our paper.)
We presented this paper to the judges, only to have our enthusiasm dampened by doubts about the feasibility of our proposal. The cost of converting sloping land into terraced fields was something we hadn’t considered at the outset. After conducting further research, we found that—given the poor transportation infrastructure—the cost of large lifting equipment and other terraced field construction, averaged out per mu, would amount to at least 10,000 yuan. I first reached out to friends and several families in G Village, but they all said they didn’t have that much money to fund the experiment. However, government-approved funding must go through multiple layers of review—what could a few high school students like us possibly do?
All in all, this article is not only a reflection of my personal thoughts and views, but also an effort to showcase our actions to a wider audience and solicit your valuable suggestions. As one GLANCE member’s motto goes, “A promise without action is worthless.” The reason we waited so long to publish this article after completing the paper is that, following discussions within GLANCE, we hoped more people would learn about our work and contribute their own modest efforts to Liangshan. We firmly believe that the power of a team is the greatest!
